Slowing

Down

It seems that somewhere around Halloween, things tend to speed up experientially the closer we get towards the New Year. I believe it’s caused by many things including one holiday stacked on top of another, football playoffs sliding right into basketball season at full speed and the hustle and bustle of all that comes with getting things ready for the big holidays.

It’s time to start slowing things down again as we enter district play for basketball and switch to softball and baseball soon to come. Baseball and softball are not my favorite sports but I think I enjoy attending them more than any other sport. The weather turns from cold to tolerable and then into down right beautiful days of 70- and 80-degree days. These two sports, at least from a fan’s or reporters’ point of view, is a leisurely game to enjoy and generally in really nice weather if we are lucky some years. Most, me included, have a pretty comfy camping chair to bring, snacks or the concession stand are a must, cool beverages and good conversation round out the event. Things are slower, more relaxed and the game is long enough to enjoy a conversation with anyone you choose or maybe a heated debate about this or that. The conversation is interrupted every so often with a crack of the bat or some excitement with a runner stealing bases.

This is how life is becoming as well, I find, as I grow more than a few gray hairs. As a young’un I dreaded this and thought I would never grow old and the thought of a lazy day watching baseball or softball never crossed my mind. I did enjoy playing baseball but watching??? Never! Ha-ha. Now I look very much forward to those lazy 80-degree days sitting outside the fence as I do the slower days with not much to do but sit on the porch and watch my dogs play or the birds sing and the wind blow through the trees. I have had enough excitement in my life it seems.

I believe this is how God intended it to be for us, God gives us wisdom as we grow older and we begin to see the finer things in life, as the years roll on. I have really learned to enjoy what God has created around me, the love of a good dog, a beautiful 80-degree day with a gentle breeze blowing through the pecan trees and a good chair on the porch. These seem like simple pleasures but simple pleasures for me will always be the best pleasures in life. Some say, how do you believe in a God you can’t see? You don’t see the wind but you can see the tree swaying in the wind so you know it’s there. God is the same way; if you open your eyes and heart you will see all the good works of God around you, just like you see the wind at work but can not see the wind. Many say if God exists then why do such terrible things happen? This is easily explained: they happen because God gave us free will. He wants us to choose him freely. To do this we have to have free will and this creates the choice to do good or evil, unfortunately. Faith is not always easy to obtain but if you take the time to understand God’s word you can find all the answers you seek. This is Will B saying, take time to enjoy those slow times in your life.
