It’s that time of year again, “fall or false fall,” as we like to say in Texas. We all know Texas always has one more week of hot weather in store for us sometime in the near future before we can expect long term cooler temps.
I will always love my summer and I have had plenty of fun-in-the-sun moments, including a trip to Olney Lake and to the water park, always coming back with a nice sunburn and a ton of new memories. Now it’s time to move on to fall. It falls a very close second to summer as my favorite season. Not because of the cooler temps - although they are a nice reprieve after a long, hot, dry Texas summer - but because I have so many great memories that took place in fall.
When I was a bit of a whippersnapper, we never missed “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!” and “The Wizard of Oz.” These two shows could only be watched in the fall - they just were not aired any other time - so it became an annual event, growing up, to look forward to. Trick or treating holds many fond memories with my two brothers and friends. It always meant bags of candy and an unwritten rule that we could go wild for one night. For some who chose not to participate and bringing wild children running through the neighborhood with candy, it meant tricks. I was not always the nice polite gentleman you see today. I will refrain from incriminating myself with stories of said tricks, I just don’t know if an old neighbor may just be reading this?!
Fall means hoodies, pumpkin spice, those favorite jeans again, my favorite leather jacket and the changing of the foliage if we are lucky, to name just a few. What are some of your favorite things about fall? Before we know it, it will be time to bundle up and find things to do in the home. Board games, movie nights, hot cocoa and plenty of nights around the fire pit will have us making many great memories for sure. One of my new favorite traditions is the Olney in America Halloween Parade. I love to see the creativity of all the younger and older kids as they make costumes and gather at the Pavilion after the parade to socialize, pass out candy and enjoy plenty of laughs and conversations.
