Taking on Generations

Taking on Generations

It’s the first day of school here and it got me thinking about all the generations and what each generation represented or is known for. Gen Z constantly gets a bad rap on social media and pretty much everywhere. They have a few redeeming qualities that most overlook though. Gen Z are very creative, socially conscious and seem to really care about their peers in general, although their zest for caring for others is misguided at times, their hearts are in the right place. Gen Z keeps us all entertained, no doubt about that, just open up Tik-Tok or pretty much any social media platform, you will find endless videos and reels that could keep you entertained for hours. So, lets lighten up on Gen Z just a bit and give them room to be who they are.

Millennials, another generation that seems to have gotten a bad rap but it seems even they have some good qualities. They are dragging the world kicking and screaming into the 21st century. The first from-scratch Gen that is from the computer age, they are tech savvy and rely heavily on the digital age. They have gotten a bad rap as being unambitious and maybe that’s one they have earned, but why does someone have to be ambitious to be happy? As long as someone is happy with their life that is all that matters.

Now Gen X, my generation. Probably the most versatile Gen so far, we grew up in between the computer age, progressing as technology did. Our motto, if there is one, was work hard and play even harder. We knew how to get our work done and work our tail bones off but when the weekend came - look out, it was time to party. Gen X produced the best music across all platforms, it’s undeniable. we had a great work ethic, we grew into the computer age so we are tech savvy, We grew up pre-computer age so we are old school as well and probably one of the best traits about Gen X, we are tough as nails. We drank from the hose and sometimes the creek, we ate mud as kids, we stayed out til the street lights came on and then we knew without being told it was time to come home. Sometimes we stayed out all night, we played on playground equipment that would break bones, skin elbows, skin knees and sometime the flesh off your bone if you went down a metal slide in shorts at the wrong time in summer. The list is long and I could go on but you most likely already know how great my Gen X is.

Boomers were all about the American dream; a college degree still meant a good job was waiting. This Gen put a real boom in the economy but later burdened all facets of retirement benefits just by the share volume of people born in this Gen. Boomers still fixed things instead of throwing them out or calling a repair person for the most part. This Gen was as a whole great for the American economy and growth of the United States as a more powerful nation. Boomers had some great music as well and many great sound movements had beginnings in this era.

The Greatest Generation has my utmost respect: they took up arms and sacrificed their youth and lives to push back the evil that was rising out of Germany and Japan. Without this Gen, there most likely would not have been freedom for anyone. This Gen made things, fixed things and got by a lot of times on scraps and next to nothing. This Gen had wholesome family values and comprise a generation who could stand up to tough times. They produced the beginnings of all the great music that would come later, mostly stemming from blues, jazz and rock. I could go on a length about all the great things this Gen stands for and has accomplished but must end it here.

This is Will B. saying, we are all just people, for better or worse. Love each other!
