March has turned into a lion! Gusting winds have been busily redoing hairdos on man and beast. They’ve also made our feathered friends join the rodeo circuit. Yes, the birds seem to be practicing for bronc riding as they bob up and down on their limbs with every gust of wind. Yippee!

What’s the deal with the buzzards who have claimed the tower in the Center of town for their gathering place? They look like California condors that used to visit us in west Texas. They look quite ominous as they glide around in circular patterns in search of something to devour. Watching these ten scavengers riding the wind currents brings flashbacks of all those western movies I’ve watched during my lifetime. Most had at least one scene of circling buzzards. Shiver!

March 14 brought much happiness and fun to the Cub Center. The occasion was the 70th wedding anniversary of Wade and Edwana Fikes. Their kids surprised them with a big family get-together over the weekend which ended with the celebration at the Center on Tuesday. What fun it was!! The Fikes’ “kids” entertained us with an assortment of religious songs as the party started. Wow, what a talented group of singers who harmonized beautifully! Steve had asked his parents to each pick an Elvis tune to dedicate to each other. Wade had selected “Love Me Tender,” so Steve crooned that tune to Edwana. Then he said the next song had been selected by his mom. The room exploded with clapping, laughing, and thunderous applause as Steve belted out, “ You ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog... “ to his dad - accompanied by a few gyrations and wiggles reminiscent of Elvis himself. What a great day!! Lots and lots of love was displayed that day -- a day to remember! The cake and ice cream were good, too.

Our birthday people this month will celebrate with cake and ice cream on the last Thursday of the month. Judy Gandy had her birthday on the first day of the month and Carlton Hughes will celebrate at the end of the month on the big 30. Sandwiched in between is James Walton who was born on the 20th. Happy birthday to you and wishes for many years to come.
