Ready for Friday Night Lights

Ready for Friday Night Lights

I have officially begun to get excited for football after taking photos at the Olney Junior High football camp and with twoa- days starting up. There are so many reasons I love football and I guess the biggest reason is nostalgia, since I played football when I was younger.

Two-a-days are a right of passage for any Texas football player. It can be brutal at times; it feels like working out in an oven. Just when you don’t think you have any more to give, the coach passes out the salt tablets, and yells to drink more water and hustle up. When it’s over, the conditioning we went through would be sealed in our bones and would yield big dividends as the season progressed. It also let us know that we could handle way more than we ever thought. God works this way sometimes as well, I have found. He pushes us to where we think we can’t handle things and we come through it stronger and hopefully, aware of how God helped us through.

Football is a brotherhood: once you have played you will always share a special bond with other players and an overwhelming love for the game. As I have gotten older, I have looked forward to football season not only for that reason, but because of the fans that attend the game.

Living in such a small and tight-knit community like Olney, it’s like a family gathering. I love to see the way people express themselves during the game. Every so often. I turn my focus away from the camera and see smiles, laughing, anger and lots of passion. I love seeing the community locked elbow to elbow supporting our Cubs and supporting each other. There is nothing like Friday Night Lights in a small town. It’s like heaven, I tell you.

The change in the weather over the course of the season is also something I enjoy. Football season starts off hotter than a goat’s butt in a pepper patch and ends with teeth chattering and knees knocking. Ha! Nachos, hot dogs in tortillas and cold drinks at the beginning of the season give way to hot cocoa, blankets and other warm treats towards the end, just as shorts turn into thick coats and boots.

Thanksgiving would never be complete without watching the Cowboys game and afterwards, an impromptu game of football in the front yard. Football watching parties, going to the occasional pro or college game and dozing off peacefully on the couch on Saturdays as the college games play out on the TV. These are just a few reasons I love football.

What are some of the reasons you love football or another sports season? This is Will B saying, see ya soon under the Friday Night Lights! Go Cubs!
