Publisher’s Points to Ponder: “What If ?”

Every time I turn on the television or surf the internet, I see civil unrest sprouting up not only throughout the U.S., but also throughout the world. In my attempt to maintain a balanced point of view, I watch multiple news programs and I listen to a variety of political pundits present arguments for and against liberals and conservatives, the right and the left, the poor and the rich, male and female, white and black; It’s a never-ending masquerade of allegiance to a country that is divided.

What if we allow our actions to change the narrative that is surfacing in our great United States of America—”the land of the free and the home of the brave”? The United States is divided by a myriad of misconceptions with racism and rioting at the forefront of many discussions. Sure, everyone has the right to view things differently and thus have an intelligent conversation that will lead to an expanded knowledge of a person’s perspective and perhaps his or her culture. We have a right to disagree on issues. We have a right to share our opinion. We have a right to “peaceably assemble” at least according to the First Amendment. Why are we infringing upon anyone’s right to stand up for their specific beliefs? Let’s stop that and become open to learning the root cause of protesting on both the right and the left. Let’s not confuse the rioting with the peaceful protests.

Eradication of the present-day division requires a simple action that every human being can do. Be respectful. What if we treat every person we meet with dignity and respect? Perhaps our yielding to respect for our fellow humans, would prevent the protesting. Maybe our surrender to respect would eliminate the need for harsh discussions that are infiltrated with hate. Possibly our submission to equality would prevent us from be critical of matters we don’t fully understand. Changing the existing division is simple. Just start by showing respect for others.

What if our respect of others restores unity? What if we see character instead of color when we look at others? What if our political views persuade positive change? What if we expand our circles of influence to include a diverse group of people? What if we love everyone as God loves us?

Let me start this new trend by saying I love you, and I see you as God sees you.
