Whew! Oppressive heat in our small town has gardens wilting away and flowers swooning for a drink. When temps get close to the 110 mark, everything and everyone is in danger. Hydration is a key word to remember: drink lots of water, but don’t forget to get those electrolytes ingested also. If you feel weak or a bit dizzy, get to a cool place and drink some Gatorade or something equivalent. Seek help if you don’t feel better pretty soon.

If you have animals outside, be sure to keep fresh water out for them and provide a shady area if possible. Keep their water in the shade because Ol’ Sol can raise the temperature quickly, and who wants to drink hot water?

I saw a video recently that really warmed my heart. This happened on a small farm inhabited with a hen, a rooster and a goat. Apparently they were good buddies because they lived in a small fenced- in enclosure together. One day a hawk swooped down and grabbed the hen by her back. The hen squalked loudly and flapped her wings in a vain attempt to free herself from those talons, which alerted her two friends to her predicament. The rooster ran over and started attacking the hawk which created a noisy scene that attracted the attention of the goat who immediately ran over to assist his feathered friends. The hawk decided to let the hen loose in order to save his own neck. Two barnyard friends protecting their buddy! We can learn a lot from the animal kingdom when it comes to making friendships and displaying courage in protecting each other. They saw a need and responded quickly; they didn’t ponder if their actions were politically correct or not. We need more compassion for our fellow men and women-- let’s do our part!

Once again I have lost a sweet friend. Martha Williams came to the Center for a while after I moved here and I was impressed with her caring and appreciative spirit. She was such a friendly lady who brought sunshine to us every time she walked through the door. Her health declined to the point that she could no longer join us at the Center, but we have our memories of her. She will be missed , but how happy we are to have known such a treasure. Condolences to her family.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, stay friendly, stay involved, stay considerate, stay passionate and spread out your sunshine along your path.
