Olney Senior Cub Center Chats

Hello there Olney people! I do hope you know how fortunate you are to live in this great little town. Total strangers will give you a big smile and say,” Hello, have a blessed day,”as they hold a door open for you or meet you in the aisle at the grocery store. I’ve lived here for 3 1/2 years and have enjoyed every minute. Yes, the streets are riddled with potholes and the summer heat is oppressive, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is the HEART of the people who live here. Thank you for welcoming this small-town country girl to Olney, and for making me feel at home and loved.

The painting class at Cub Center will be history by the time the next issue of the paper hits the rack, so I’ll give a report on it next week. Thanks to our director, Angela Lockard, for getting a grant from Wal-Mart to fund this project. Looking forward to a fun day on Tuesday!

Come to the Center for lunch and hang out with a group of friendly, talented people. Christi Garcia oversees the kitchen and orders the food. She helps prepare our meals and always has a smile when she greets us each morning. Then, when she leaves from the Center, she helps her husband,Manuel, with his lawn mowing endeavor. She is a busy lady who takes good care of us. Her sidekick, Manuel, helps deliver meals each day and also helps with cleanup and maintenance. What a duo! Manuel always has a twinkle in his eyes and a smile as big as the great outdoors on his face! What a joy to be greeted by the Garcia’s every morning!

One of my “42” buddies at the Center has come to my rescue on several occasions. When I locked my keys in my vehicle (yes, I’m guilty as charged), on a chilly night when I went to the grocery store. When I realized my dilemma, I dialed my buddy who had once been a locksmith. After a giggle from him, Hubert Gray got in his pickup and came to the store. With an impish grin on his face, he quickly opened the door. Relief! Again, when I needed to change my door locks on my house, I dialed Hubert. He went to Wichita Falls to get the hardware I needed and replaced them for me. Super guy, that Hubert! But... now I am indebted to him! I think I owe him an apple pie. I will do that...when I get a round toit.; (I had a small wooden disc once that had “toit” stamped on it, but I lost it-- sorry Hubert!)Again, so thankful for the friendships made at Cub Center!

Sneezing, watering eyes, and stuffed up nose! Probably allergies or hay fever or whatever. The types of pollen that most commonly cause allergic reactions are produced by the plain-looking plants (trees, grasses, and weeds) that do not have showy flowers. These plants produce small, light, dry pollen granules that are custom -made for wind transport. Samples of ragweed pollen have been collected 400 miles out at sea and two miles high in the air. A single ragweed plant can generate a million grains of pollen a day! Wow! Trees and grasses also produce pollen that can cause problems. There are more than 1000 species of grass in North America, but only a few have allergenic pollen. Indoor allergies are usually caused by dust mites or pet dander in house dust. Wash sheets and pillowcases in hot water to kill mites, but remember that they may be in pillows and mattresses so zippered coverings for those are recommended. Carpets also provide homes for mites. There are sprays to kill them, so you may want to consider that. HEPA filters are also a recommendation to allergy sufferers.

Treva Wood and husband Keith ate with us last Thursday-- a delightful, friendly couple. They just moved Treva’s mom, Jocelyn Gaines, to Olney and brought her to Cub Center to introduce us to her and vice-versa. We certainly hope she becomes part of our family here and comes on a regular basis. We do love fun-loving, happy people!

Our sympathy goes to Allen Bernhardt’s family in this time of loss. What a great guy to be around! He often stayed long after lunch to visit and laugh with us. He and Edward Furr were great pals and both liked to kid and joke around. Neither had a bashful bone in his body, and their laughter was highly contagious! Oh, how we will miss Allen’s humor and his presence here at the Center! But...his legacy lives on! Thank you Allen!

Enjoy our beautiful moon-- Smile every day--Say nice things about people --Be kind always! See you next week.
