The birthday party last week was loads of fun! J.R. Smith played the piano while the rest of us attempted to stay in tune as we sang “Happy Birthday” to our buddies. Cake and ice cream is ALWAYS good! J.R. had a great idea: eat the cake and ice cream first before it melts! Sounded like a feasible plan to me! So, we did!

All of these beautiful fluffy clouds gracing our sky for over a week now bring back memories from my childhood. Do you remember lying on your back in the cool grass gazing up at those drifting marshmallows in the sky? Oh, look, that one resembles a dog! No, an elephant! And the list goes on and on. I saw a big giraffe’s head on Wednesday. Too bad I was rushing from one appointment to another with little time to enjoy my “animal hunt.” Too much rushing and not enough looking to suit me.

I vow to do better! One more week and our “Big Bash for TEXOMA GIVES day” will be in full swing! Our doors will open predawn at 6:00 for coffee and donuts. Don’t be too late or those donuts may have disappeared! At 10:00 those BINGO numbers will start being called, so come get your cards and play for prizes. After lunch we will again be hosting a painting class - this time it starts at 1:00 p.m. You must pre-register for this class since we are limited in class size. Call Cub Center and sign up with Angela if you’d like to participate. Drawings and prizes will be given during the day, so be sure to be here!

Chief Birbeck and Lt. Hudson came to present information regarding scams and misleading advertisements. They gave examples of some of the most common scams and cautioned us about opening emails on our computers and phones.

Identity thieves are still out there working overtime to learn our personal information, so be vigilant to safeguard your information. If you are compromised, it will take up to a year or more to get it straightened out. Be wary! Don’t give personal information over the phone. Medicare and the IRS will contact you by mail, so don’t respond to calls claiming to be from them. Hang up.

Our local police department is ready to help you if you have any questions. They care and are willing to help you; they are truly ‘the good guys.’ If you want more information about scams and such, call the police department and ask them for help.

Wow! What a difference one week makes! Lawns have been magically transformed from brown to green in just one week! How amazing is that?! That luscious rain was the catalyst in that huge transformation! We love rain! Makes everybody smile!

A great man died last week. He was a coach, a Christian coach, who impacted thousands of lives. He came to Denver City when my two oldest boys were playing football, so they benefited from his teaching and coaching. Later when my youngest son chose Abilene Christian University to attend, he, too, was privileged and honored to be coached by the same great coach: Gary Gaines! What a legacy! The movie “Friday Night Lights” was supposedly about Gary’s team at Permian High in Odessa, but it fell short on depicting the man he was. How privileged my sons were to have known this great man who humbly did the best he could to influence young men. He is dearly missed.

Be someone’s mentor and inspiration this week.
