My Nickel’s Worth

“March”ing into sports

As we begin March--one of my favorite months of the year, a few things come to mind as we head into another spring.

The first of which is the beginning of baseball season and heading towards the end of basketball season. Growing up, March meant that spring training had arrived and that the NCAA tournament--aka March Madness, is upon us. It will be special this year because last year March Madness was canceled, and baseball didn’t begin until July--all due to COVID-19.

This spring represents a new season where we begin to get back to normal life. But it reminds me that nothing is guaranteed and I know that it is just a sporting event, but it reminds me that not all things are guaranteed in life. It’s hard to believe that we are just about to come up on a year when events started to get canceled, but it will make everything that much more special this year as we continue to move forward. I can remember waking up as a kid and watching the March madness games from morning until dark all weekend. Then as I got older, my friends and I started doing the tournament challenge to see who could guess how the tournament would play out most accurately--a tradition that still lives on to this day after 10 years! The same goes for spring training, as I would watch the pre-season games to see the new players the Yankees had acquired in the offseason, along with watching the fan favorites from years past. These have always been traditions of mine and luckily it continues this month.

This will be the first March Madness and first MLB spring training in two years---and I sure have missed it!
