Life is brief

Psalm 39:4, “LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered--how fleeting my life is.

How many days do you have left in this lifetime? We just DON’T know. The book of James says that “our lives are just a vapor.”

According to the Social Security Administration, my life expectancy is 82 years and 4 months. This means I have 9,765 days left on earth – barring an accident, illness, God having less days planned for me, or the Rapture.

Life is brief and it seems to only go by faster. We naturally lean toward being comfortable and simply going through the motions of life. God has numbered our days, and we shouldn’t squander them.

Consider Jesus. He was fully aware of the number of His days, and He wasted no time making “fishers of men” out of His devoted disciples. His objective was clear: Give His life as a ransom for many, and train His followers to propagate the Good News of Jesus Christ. He would do all this in three short years – 1,095 days.

God has a plan for your life – or should I say, your “days.” You can’t live tomorrow today. You can plan for tomorrow, but you can only live out today. Make the most of today. Finish that thing that you have been procrastinating. Tell that person you love them. Send that card. Help that person. Smile that smile. Reconcile that broken relationship. Tell that person about Jesus. Confess that sin. Most of all, use today to prepare yourself for where you will spend eternity – a day of which you don’t know. Time’s a ticking!
