Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

Matt McGhee here, I’m running for State Senator in Senate District 30.

The unopposed Senate race in 2022 was the last straw for me. So much in Texas politics is broken, and it’s because the same rich people run this State the way they always have, for the benefit of themselves and their rich friends.

I want to be the everyman in this race, and I can’t be anything but that - I’m a millennial, a dad, and I work nightshift. I’m very done with all my friends working multiple jobs and not getting ahead. I’m tired of bailing homeless people (who have jobs!) out when their car breaks down. I graduated college in 2010 smack in the middle of a recession, but that was when I could rent a single wide for $300 a month or buy a starter house for $60,000! There’s a reason students and grads these days are depressed, they don’t have any future. And, families that have been in Texas for generations can’t afford to live here anymore, between the investors snapping up starter homes and the people moving here from out of state.

I’m up against basically an impossible task here. I’m not from the “establishment” on either side. I need the donations from the people who are so far from struggling they aren’t even aware of the problem, to help the people that are losing everything.

My campaign’s issues are simple. Get rent and house prices under control by increasing supply and making sure homes go to homeowners. Make health care affordable for everyone, and make billing simple and predictable. The establishment is never going to do that, that involves regulating and taxing their corporate donors.

I don’t think we can make any headway on any grand social issues while people are not sure they can keep a roof over their heads, and those that have “made it” have done so at the expense of all their time being spent working. If we had less stress and more time for new friends, we would actually have a chance at everyone getting along. An amazing number of issues disappear when you just deal with poverty.

We also need to be able to walk into the DMV and get helped right away again. I miss that.

Thanks,
