Having Cub fever

Having Cub fever

It’s that time of year again, two-a-days! I get way too excited for Friday Night Lights; you know what, that is perfectly all right to go bonkers for something you love. Football has been near and dear to my heart ever since I can remember.

My love for football began at an early age, with watching the Cowboys during Thanksgiving, and although I wasn’t much good when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, I did my best with the tradition of backyard catch and football after the Thanksgiving game. My love grew as I later played for optimist leagues and grew into a young man’s giant. I have always been big, even as a youngster. Coaches always put it to good use on the line.

The O-line always holds a special place in my love of football. I mostly played right or left guard and was pretty good at my job. Nothing brought me more pleasure as a player than to flatten anyone brave enough to line up on me. When I was not pancaking, I loved to open holes in the line you could drive a Mac truck through. I played defense as well, and although it was fun, it never did bring the satisfaction of being on the O-line.

Anyone who knows me knows I love my Chiefs. I have been a Chiefs fan since Joe Montana joined the Chiefs. I am a Cowboys fan as well, but I place the Cowboys just slightly under the Chiefs. It seemed like an endless time of seasons of disappointments, but you must take the good with the bad with any team, at least if you’re a true fan.

My love for Friday Night Lights began about four years ago when I moved to Olney. I am a rabid Cubs fan, and don’t let me ever hear you speaking an ill word about my Cubs. I know I am forever hooked on Friday night football and wonder why I never found this love before. What I love most are a few things. First, the players play with extreme heart, never wanting to disappoint our little town of Olney. Second, the Cubs will fight to the very end, even if victory is indeed not attainable. Third, my Cubs have courage. I have seen them time after time facing opponents far out of their league, yet they did not waver an inch. They met those teams with true Cub grit and courage. The last thing I love about Friday night lights with my Cubs is the community. The Olney community is comprised of people who know adversity and are tough; you will never see someone with true Olney spirit giving up. We dig deep and keep pushing!

I have not had a chance to get out to watch a practice just yet; something I usually never miss is the first day of two-a-days. I aim to rectify that shortly, though, and look forward to seeing my Cubs take the field in their first scrimmage. This is Will B. saying, LETS GO, CUBS!!!
