Enjoying Rainy Days

Is it just me or does everyone love a nice rainy day every now and then - to just chill out and decompress?

I am talking about a rainy day where all there is to do is nothing, no sneaking off to breakfast or a quick run for groceries. I am talking about a day all to yourself to do those things that each of us loves to only on rainy days.

Today is a long rainy day and although I am still working most of the day, I will still carve out a little time for some of my favorite rainy-day activities.

Some of these activities are deeply rooted in our core memories for various reasons. Cooking with my mom is a deep core memory that brings back sweet thoughts of my mom; so too are some things done on rainy days with the ones we love.

Some of my favorite things to do on rainy days are opening all the windows, when it’s not too cold, turning on my stereo and listening to some classic rock, jazz and on occasion reggae. Anything smooth will do like Pink Floyd, The Doors, Steely Dan, Bob Marley, Coltrane or Kenny G. I could go on and on because I love music and most of my core memories are tied to music.

Taking a nap is almost mandatory on a long rainy day with the dark sky, pitter patter of rain as it does its dance on the roof and the distant sound of a rumble of thunder. When I was a wee lad when it was storming and thunder was pretty loud my mom would say, ‘Nothing to worry about it’s just God bowling with the angels.’

Nothing is quite as peaceful as reading a good book or reading some of those magazines that are stacked up on the shelf gathering dust as they sit there patiently waiting for me to slow down just enough to read them. Of course, there is one tradition on a rainy day that I believe most everyone partakes in, curling up on the couch snuggling with a loved one or pup with a fresh popped bowl of finger-licking buttered popcorn and watching a great movie or catching up on a show with a little rainy-day binge-watching party.

Some will find it to hard to resist putting on the rain slicker and mud boots and taking a long walk in the rain, stopping along the way to explore each shimmering puddle of water with calfhigh boots, either sloshing through the puddles or for those still young at heart, leaping high in the air and coming down with a huge splash in the middle of the puddle to see how far the water will splash. Pups will thank you for bringing them along a rain-soaked walk as well, an adventure for just you and him. What is something you enjoy doing on a rainy day with nothing to do? This is Will B saying, pass the popcorn and start the movie!
