Although we are basking in the glow of satisfaction after our Veteran’s Day fete, the realization that many struggles daily humbles us, there is more to be done to help them overcome their obstacles, whether mental, physical or psychological.

If you know a struggling veteran, encourage them to contact the local office for assistance. It is hard to address a problem if they aren’t aware that a problem exists. Reach out.

Yes, the many statues and memorials erected in Washington DC to honor veterans are wonderful, but they are also restrictive. Not all veterans have the means to travel there. The Honor Flights are a tremendous help, and the experience is exhilarating! I’ve visited with some when they returned home from the flights, and the joy and pride on their faces shouted out in loud chorus that they were so appreciative for that adventure! God bless America! God bless our heroes!

Not all heroes served on foreign soil; countless men and women worked behind the scenes to provide supplies and necessities right here in the USA. Without them and their sacrifices, our troops would have had a more difficult time.

Even now, we have unsung heroes in the classrooms teaching our children loyalty, patriotism, respect, pride and humility. A young fourth-grade teacher I know reads THE WALL to her students every year before Veteran’s Day, and despite her determined resolve, she cries. Yes, she cries. In front of her students, she cries! What a great lesson she has just taught! Her principal was called to read the story to the next class so she could recover and steel herself for yet another class reading. As the principal read, her eyes started sparkling with teardrops, and the teacher joined with her own misty eyes to teach that grand lesson to those young, attentive children held in rapt attention as they witnessed the humanity and vulnerability of their beloved teachers. Great lesson!

There are great teachers and leaders in every school. Ask your children why they like their favorite teacher. I think love and compassion will be the common denominators. Send that teacher a note of gratitude to be hand-delivered by your child. What a ray of sunshine you will have sent!

There are two more birthdays on tap for November: Dorothy Cook on the 22nd and Nadyne Copeland on the 24th. Acknowledge them on their day with a call, text, hug or card.

The next “Big Deal” at the center will be ‘Souper Bowl Sunday,’ so pencil that in and come for a great meal! Yummy on the tummy fare!!

Dare to be naive. Let’s bring innocence back into our lifestyles—re-establish trust and reliability in our dealings with others.

Smile-it becomes you.
