WOW! What an exhilarating day at the Center as we honored our veterans! People bedecked in various patterns of red, white, and blue or caps bearing the insignia of their branch of service streamed through our doors to be honored and thanked for their willingness to fight for America.

Doug Magneson and Betty Omholt were coordinators for the festivities and were assisted by the Cub Center personnel. Thanks to those people who gave their time to be part of that great day. A special thanks to Jerri Ford, Linda Phillips, and Angela Lockhard for donning aprons or assisting our guests. Everyone raved about the food— give Christi Garcia and helpers Kristen and B.J. a pat on the back for preparing that tasty turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

Our ceremony began with the singing of our national anthem by all assembledwhat a wonderful sound that was; it was a lump-in-the-throat experience for sure.

Betty presented veterans with a packet explaining the poppy’s significance and read the poem that gave inspiration for using the poppy as a symbol. Each person was given a poppy, and what a heartwarming sight to see those tough veterans proudly pinning them on their shirts! It is truly great to be an American!

Stan Mahler provided our entertainment, including patriotic and western songs; his renditions brought enthusiast applause from approximately seventy people. That guy can yodel with the best! Thank you, Stan!

A reading about The Tomb of the Unknown was given to explain how those interred were chosen and why it is so intensely guarded. I have visited that site twice and was awed by the reverence and honor shown during the laying of the wreath and the changing of the guard. If you ever have a chance to go to Arlington Cemetery, jump at the chance. Seeing those white crosses is a sobering sight indeed.

When the Civil War began, Robert E. Lee was asked to lead the troops for the North, but his strong allegiance and love for his home state of Virginia caused him to lead the southern troops. His mansion and 1,000 acres were seized by the North and became the site of the Arlington Cemetery.

Rep. Joey Arrington said on 11-11-21, “Happy Veteran’s Day to all Americans as we celebrate our heroesthose who wore the uniform and were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom. Thanks to those one-percenters of every generation who put it all on the line for the greatest country in the world. We treasure you. You are a monument of sacrifice, courage, valor and patriotism! All that’s good about America is embodied in you...”

We hope this Veteran’s Day celebration becomes a yearly event here at the Center. Make plans to attend!

Sometimes we feel overwhelmed and unloved as we journey through life, but I found this quote that has a solution for those feelings:

“If grass can grow through cement, love can find you at every time in your life.”

~ Cher

We need to have an open mind and heart to receive it. Show a little love to someone who needs it and open your heart to feel the rebound.
