Sr. Cub Center

Well, hello 2023! Yes, I stayed up late and welcomed it to Olney, Texas with the hope that it brings a more normal year, financial stability, and relief from the unusually high prices for food and fuel.

Maybe we could take a few lessons from our fuzzy friends, the squirrels. Their favorite food source, the pecan tree, failed to produce last year, so they branched out (pun intended) to the stately oak trees which produced acorns in abundance. We just need to follow their example and modify our wants and wishes and be satisfied with the outcome. Do we really ‘need’ the fancy cuts of meat and the top brands of canned goods? The answer is,”No!” It is a choice between “want” and “need.” Choose wisely with your purchasing power, turn down those thermostats a notch or two, and take care to fix leaky faucets. Remember the words of Benjamin Franklin who said, “ A penny saved is a penny earned.”

Our local economy must be in pretty good shape, or Santa was especially generous this past December. New cars and trucks, sporting dealer tags, have appeared all over town, so “CONGRATULATIONS” to you proud owners of new wheels!

The Cub Center has been busy during the holidays. Every congregate diner received a gift from the Center. A few activities took place just prior to Christmas. Wanda McDaniel won first place with her tree and Edward Furr won the reindeer competition. Bill and his bandits (Bill, Corky, and James) have raked in the prizes during our Wednesday morning bingo sessions. Such a happy and fun time each week! The twinkling tree has been retired for a while as we prepare for the upcoming events and fundraisers.

Our birthday buddies for January: Mitch Camp, Lonnie Howe, Jerry Riggings and Bob Dillard. Our big birthday bash for them will be on the last Thursday of the month, so come on down and help them celebrate! Cake and ice cream is mighty tasty.

That frigid, blustery day that recently visited us and froze a few pipes was tough on some Christmas decorations as well. Lights often sagged a bit after the big blow and some displays were damaged a little. To my horror and dismay a reindeer lost its head, but its owners were quick to repair the damage and get that that nose-planted head back in place.

Next month will bring Valentine’s Day so start thinking about what you can delight your “sweetie” with. Shelves are already full of decorations and chocolate confections to tempt buyers, but try to “WOW” that special someone with your own special surprise for Cupid’s Day. A lonesome neighbor may need someone to affirm their existence as important, so consider treating them to a surprise also. We ARE our brother’s keeper after all!

Have a super week as you spread sunshine along your path.
