“Today is my Birthday”

“Today is my Birthday”

Oct. 28 is my birthday. I have never been a big fan of birthdays, although God has blessed me to be alive every year; And with each passing year, I wonder how long I can be 35 years old.

I believe my disdain for birthdays may have begun when I was 9 years old. My mother would make me attend my neighbor’s birthday parties, and his mom would always have a clown at the party who chased you around in an attempt to stamp your face. I dislike clowns and everything they stand for. I will suffer through a party, but hold the clowns, please.

Then there is the silly “Happy birthday” song. The song isn’t so bad unless your guests are singing it to you. I look forward to the end until someone starts on the second stanza, signing, “How old are you?” After the song, you stand there hoping that nobody will perform a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s birthday song, which lasts for at least three minutes--my people gravitate toward the latter.

Here’s what I’ve learned during the past few decades of living: live every moment like there is no tomorrow, which means you must be authentic by standing behind your convictions; You must refuse to settle for less by knowing your worth; And, you should love everyone at God loves you.

Bon anniversaire to me.

Thank you, God, for breathing life into me again. I pray that I can live a life that pleases You and be a blessing to others.
