Villalpandos jailed on assault charges

Olney police arrested father and son repeat offenders for assaults on family members that could put them in prison for extended sentences a year after the grandson pled guilty to drug trafficking charges in exchange for a 20-year prison sentence.

Felisiano Villalpando III, 40, and his father, Felisiano Villalpando Jr., 63, were in Young County Jail in connection with a series of assaults on family members at the family’s North Avenue E residence in July and August, jail records show. Mr. Villalpando III, is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond and Mr. Villalpando Jr. is jailed on $25,000 bond, jail records show.

Mr. Villalpando Jr. was arrested at the Avenue E home by officers responding to a domestic violence call, Olney Police Chief Dan Birbeck said. Family members had cornered Mr. Villalpando in the back yard and told officers that he had assaulted his wife, striking her and choking her with his hands, Chief Birbeck said.

It was the fourth time in a year that Mr. Villalpando Jr. has been jailed for assaults, including two assaults on family members, jail records show. He was jailed on Aug, 21, 2023; Oct. 4, 2023; and Oct, 24, 2023 on similar charges, jail records show.

He has been charged with a third-degree felony of assault on a family member-impeding breath, jail records show.

His son, Mr. Villalpando III, was arrested on Aug. 15 in the front yard of the Avenue E home by officers responding to a call about a disturbance in progress, Chief Birbeck said. Mr. Villalpando III confronted a family member’s boyfriend who was staying at the residence because he believed the man was having an affair with his girlfriend, Chief Birbeck said.

Although the boyfriend denied having a relationship with Mr. Villalpando III’s girlfriend, Mr. Villalpando III began beating the man with a shovel handle as he lay in bed, Chief Birbeck said. Mr. Villalpando III then turned the shovel handle on a juvenile who intervened to move Mr. Villalpando III away from property with sentimental value, Chief Birbeck said. The juvenile suffered serious injuries, including a head injury, he said.

Mr. Villalpando III was then forced out the back door by a third family member but fled down the alley and appeared again at the front door, Chief Birbeck said. He was apprehended by police as he continued to argue with family members through the front door, he said.

“Due to him using the weapon that he had and the injuries that were sustained, he was taken into custody for aggravated assault on a family member with a deadly weapon,” Chief Birbeck said. “The family did indicate that he was on something that was causing the paranoia - what he thought was going on with his partner.”

It was alleged that Mr. Villalpando III pulled a pocket knife on the juvenile, he said. Police recovered the shovel handle but did not locate the pocket knife, he said.

Mr. Villalpando III was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a family member.

“I think that he has definitely hurt people and he is very capable of hurting other people. I do think he’s dangerous to the public,” Chief Birbeck said.

The arrests cap a yearlong effort to get a handle on members of the community who account for a disproportionate number of crimes in Olney.

The grandson, Felisiano Ray Villalpando, 23, pled guilty in June of 2023 to a drug trafficking charge and was sentenced to 20 years in state prison in a case that law enforcement officials hoped has sent a message to entrenched drug dealers and users in the area.

The youngest Villalpando has an arrest record dating from 2018 for offenses that escalated from lottery fraud to aggravated sexual assault of a child, Young County Jail records show. Olney police also had run-ins with Mr. Villalpando’s grandfather and father last summer.

On April 18, 2023, Olney police and Texas Department of Public Safety officers raided the family’s North Elm Street home with flash-bang grenades and tear gas to try to flush Mr. Villalpando III out following his alleged assault on an elderly or disabled person during a burglary attempt in Olney. He eluded police but was arrested 10 days later at the Western Heights apartments after police asked for the public’s help in locating him. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from that incident and was soon released back into the community.
