A Song of Salvation
“Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the LORD, and said, “I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted; The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.” Exodus 15:1 NASBS
Beloved in Christ, I hope this brief devotion brings you great encouragement today as we reflect on the heart of Moses after his deliverance from Egypt. Moses was a man of significant privilege, having been raised within the royal courts of Pharaoh and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, granting him access to the vast resources of Egypt. But when the fullness of the time came, the God of Abraham aroused within him deep convictions regarding the sins of Egypt, and the personal struggles that ensnared him. After taking the life of an Egyptian, which made him obstinate in the eyes of Pharaoh, he fled into the wilderness. He wandered into Midian becoming a shepherd and many years later he encountered God on Mount Horeb in a burning bush that was not consumed. After many convincing truths from God, Moses returned to Egypt, not only to confront his past struggles but also to lead the entire nation of Israel to freedom through God’s sovereign power.
When Moses returned to Egypt after a span of 40 years, it was as if God used him as a pen to inscribe history for all to read. Through Moses, God demonstrated His sovereign power not only over the elements of nature but over all of creation—from the tiniest insect to the mightiest beasts of the field, and even over humanity itself. After the remarkable deliverance from Egypt, where the Lord brought down the wealthiest and most powerful nation of the ancient world, Moses and the Israelites erupted in praise, declaring, “I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted; The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea. The LORD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will extol Him.”
Brothers and sisters, after Moses crossed the Red Sea and turned to look back at his enemies, he saw them engulfed by the mighty waters. In that pivotal moment, Moses realized that God had not only delivered him from the past sins that troubled him in Pharaoh’s courts but also from the present doubts he held regarding God’s power, as well as the future struggles that could arise within his heart concerning his relationship with God. Thus, what became the greatest deliverance in Old Testament history also marked the most significant liberation for Moses within his own soul. He recognized God’s hand guiding him from the moment of his birth, even when death had been decreed against him, up to that very instant. Deep in his heart, he understood that God’s love was inescapable.
The book of Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is a time and season for everything. However, when we truly grasp the nature of salvation, we realize that there is never a moment when a song of gratitude should not be on our lips. For we were lost, bound in our own iniquity, and enslaved to sin. But God has delivered us from all our sins, washing them away through the precious blood of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. The Scriptures teach us, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”
Therefore, may our hearts overflow with gratitude and joyful praise. The God of heaven, through His Son, Jesus Christ, and the powerful work of the Holy Spirit, has saved us to the uttermost. Reflect on the sacrifice of Christ and envision the crimson blood flowing from His wounds, washing away the stain of sin from your souls for eternity. Contemplate the crown of thorns upon His head, recognizing that He knew you long before the foundation of the world was laid. Understand that one day, those loving hands, eternally marked by the nails of His crucifixion, will gently embrace us, holding us with a love so deep and profound that it surpasses our understanding.
