Show Your Support for Olney’s Future Skatepark Fundraiser, Sat. July 31

Olney Skatepark Advocacy Group (OSAG is forging ahead with great confidence in raising $350,000 to complete the skatepark project at Griffin Park in Olney. The next fundraiser is a cornhole tournament this Saturday, July 31, at the American Legion Post 414, located at 103 Hwy 251 S. in Olney. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. The event was organized by Michelle Welsh, the vice commander at the Legion and an OSAG committee member. Welsh said, “We are expecting to have a great turnout.” OSAG comprises a group of parents, grandparents, citizens and youth in Olney “passionate about providing a safe location to skateboard.” The committee members are Dustin and Shanda Hope and their son, Collin; Chris Garcia and his son, James; Todd and Ashley Phillips and their son, Logan; Nick Tellez, Michelle Welsh and son, Richard Elizondo; and Laci Tate.

OSAG is working with Keep Olney Beautiful (KOB), and both groups decided that the best location would be at Tom Griffin Park—north of the pool and east of the basketball-tennis court. OSAG encourages the town to embrace the skatepark project for various reasons, such as providing a positive outlet for youth, combating childhood obesity through exercising on wheels, helping with the prevention of teen depression and drug use by introducing them to a fun hobby.

The community may also show support by donating money, purchasing T-shirts and participating in fundraisers, such as the tournament Saturday. Registration begins at 4 p.m. and the cost is $20 per person. Cornhole tournaments have been proven to be lots of fun, so come out to have fun while supporting a good cause.
