Ron Wright files legislation protecting states’ abortion rights
WASHINTON, DC — Yesterday, Congressman Ron Wright introduced H.R. 2817, the Child Custody Protection Act of 2019. Currently, 37 states require some level of parental involvement in a minor’s decision to have an abortion. In an effort to skirt these commonsense state laws, however, minors living in these states are frequently transported to surrounding states with more permissive abortion laws.
Congressman Wright stated, “The Child Custody Protection Act would make it a federal offense to transport a minor across state lines in order to circumvent a state law requiring parental involvement in that minor’s abortion. Adults who knowingly transport a minor across state lines to bypass parental consent or notification laws would be subject to criminal and civil penalties, including fines, up to a year in prison, or both.”
