Prayerful, Resilient, Enthusiastic, Tenacious, Thankful, Yielded

What does it mean to be pretty? Many refer to the word as “attractive,” but few focus on the characteristics that attract. Modern-day standards indicate that beauty requires a person to have specific features, especially concerning body sizes and types.

This perception caused me to hate my appearance because I believed I fell short of the world’s expectations for beauty. And then it occurred to me that it does not matter how the world defines beauty; what matters is what God says about it.

While praying, I reflected on Proverbs 31:10-31, which describes the character of a strong and wise woman, stating, “She is clothed with strength and dignity...” (Proverbs 31:25) and ending with “Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.” (Proverbs 31:30).

After many months of reflecting on Proverbs 31, I redefined “pretty” as someone who is Prayerful, Resilient, Enthusiastic, Tenacious and Thankful with a Yielded heart to God’s plan. As I began meditating on these qualities and various scriptures, I became stronger and dropped 140 pounds during the past three years. Although I

am still on the weight loss journey, I want to encourage and inspire others to make healthy choices that will improve their quality of life over time.

The process begins with making a tough decision, and I chose life. I had no idea where to start, so I spent much time researching to gain a deeper understanding of fitness. I earned certifications in personal training and nutrition to help others who are ready to begin their journey to a healthier life.

The P.R.E.T.T.Y. Girl Fitness project offers education, physical training, and support to women who may have similar struggles with weight and physical fitness. My mission is to foster an environment that motivates women to embrace their ‘pretty’ one rep at a time. Every worthwhile endeavor begins with small steps, and I am here for you, so choose life.

I’m facilitating free classes at the Refuge at 1418 W. Elm Street in Olney.

Classes will begin Oct. 4. The aerobic dance class will be on Wednesday mornings at 6 a.m. and Saturday mornings at 10 a.m.
