Rain delays harvest

The rains this spring have delayed the wheat harvest, according to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension officials. Idle equipment, such as this combine, sits waiting for the sun to come out and the humidity to go down. Grain elevators will not accept wheat to store if the sample has a moisture content of 13.5% or higher, said Susan Jeske, who supplied the pho- to of fields planted by her son, Will Jeske. Too moist and it could mold or rot. It will overheat and actually could ignite when stored in a confined space, she said. Susan snapped this photo on June 7 after an early evening downpour made the field impossible to cut. “The wheat is ready to harvest - when it gets dry enough,” she said. Wild hogs have damaged some fields, she noted.
