Stand Up to

Stand Out

Choosing the right thing is not always easy—especially when your life is on the line. You can be fully aware that you have high blood pressure, yet you choose to add salt to your meals and stress to your life. Neither does getting defeated by diabetes on the battlefield make it easier to transition to a plantbased diet. Sometimes, digesting the medication during the battle is less threatening if it means earning the reward of delightful indulgence. Although the choice is not always easy, it is always possible to choose wisely. What sacrifices are you willing to make?

As I think about my sacrifices to live a healthier lifestyle, I am reminded of Stephen’s final moments expressed in Acts 7. After a false accusation, Stephen appeared before the high council to address the charges against him. I don’t know about you, but if someone lies about me and I can clear my name, I will make my case and defend my dignity. And if I know that I could die if I don’t do a good job, I will shout as loudly and boldly as possible. Stephen, however, chose to react differently. He decided not to focus on his integrity; instead, he focused on the integrity of the Gospel [The Purpose]. He faced the high council and touted the history that carried him to the room where he addressed his adversaries. He reminded the council about the written law and pointed out their failure to follow it. In other words, he made them angry by not saying what they wanted to hear or doing what they wanted him to do. He went against the status quo, yet he stood boldly beside his choice to fight for the Gospel right up to the moment of taking his last breath. His courage to stand up made him stand out as an advocate for Christ.

Our lifestyle choices may not be as devastating as Stephen’s. Still, in many cases, our choices may very well be life-threatening in the sense of causing death to relationships where we’re not supported because we are choosing to make healthier choices, such as selecting salmon instead of steak. Just know that everyone will not agree with your new way of living. Rather than get on the defensive, move like Stephen by confidently standing up for your new way of life. Everyone will not go on this journey with you, so let go and focus on your purpose. Despite the lack of support, push forward with the hope that your loved ones will cheer for you when you cross the finish line.
