Olney Police arrested six people on drug charges since Aug. 1, a slight uptick from previous months, including habitual offenders as well as people driving through town, Police Chief Dan Birbeck said. Olney Police Cpl. Miranda Wright made four of the arrests during traffic stops and a warrant search, she said. The busts yielded quantities of heroin, methamphetamine, psilocybin “mushrooms” and drug paraphernalia.

One of the suspects was arrested carrying 4.5 grams of methamphetamine and nine empty syringes that were being delivered, 22 personal checks that belonged to an elderly individual here in town that she did not have permission to have,” Cpl Wright said. She was charged with the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance as well as fraud, use and possession of identifying information of an elderly person. The suspect had two warrants for motion to adjudicate guilt for similar charges, she said.

Cpl. Wright made another bust at Tom Griffin Park after discovering a man and woman parked after the park closed. She said she detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle when she stopped to question the individuals. The man, from Venezuela, admitted to having two buds of marijuana and was arrested for possession contraband in a drug-free zone, she said.

“It’s been pretty slow here lately and we just got bombarded,” Cpl. Wright said.
