Olney Amputee Dove Hunt almost here

The Olney Amputee Dove Hunt (OADH) is occurring Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept.11, in Olney.

The two men—Jack Bishop and Jack Northrup—- lovingly called “The One-Arm Jacks,” started hosting this event in 1972 due to the loss of their arms. Bishop lost his arm when he was 2 years old after his cancer diagnosis. Northrup lost his arm later in life after an automobile accident in 1956.

To turn tragedy into triumph, the One Arm Dove Hunt was established as an annual event that welcomes amputees from across the country. There were only six people at the first event, and it has grown throughout the years.

This year’s festivities will begin with the golf scramble at 8 a.m. Participants will T-off at Olney Country Club at 7:30 a.m. at 1 Bankhead Drive. Lunch follows at noon, and the trap shoot at 2 p.m. at Hunter’s Headquarters located at 911 North Avenue C. Day one will end with the usual barbecue dinner at the Olney Civic Center. The evening will be filled with entertainment, auctions (live and silent) and door prizes. This is the place to be if you enjoy meeting the amputees and hearing their stories about what the OADH means to them.

Rise early Saturday to enjoy the 10-centsa-finger breakfast from 6 a.m. until 8 a.m. Event organizer Jan Williams said, “The dove hunt will begin as soon as all registered hunters arrive and complete the safety briefing. The safety briefing is mandatory. So the sooner everyone is there, the sooner we can hunt.”

If you’re not a hunter, Williams said they have organized other fun activities you can participate in at the Olney Civic Center during the hunt, including Bingo. Lunch opens at noon and will include a silent auction and the presentation of awards for golf, the trap shoot and the hunt. The winner of the 12-gauge shotgun will be announced after lunch and before the group photo.

Other events that will begin at 1:30 p.m. include the cornhole tournament, the horseshoe tournament, the cow chip chunkin’ contest, and the awards presentation. You may sign up for these additional events at the registration table at the Olney Civic Center.

Williams said, “I look forward to seeing everyone, and I hope you will have an awesome time.”
