OISD Sixth Grade Band takes top honors at Howard Payne Band Festival

Members of the Sixth grade Band from Olney Junior High School received top honors recently in the Howard Payne Band Festival in Brownwood. The festival was April 19. Students performed on the stage of Mims Auditorium on the HPU campus.

Receiving a first division from each of the concert judges on the three concert selections, the band received a trophy for superior performance.

Percussion section members also received a first division rating.

Musical selections performed by the group included “Fighting Falcons March” by Todd Stalter, “Courtland County Festival” by William Owens, and “A Summer’s Knight” by Peter Terry.

Judges for the competition were Mr. Josh Bailey from Alvarado ISD, Mr. Luedke from Dublin ISD, Mr. Matthew Cleveland of Ballinger ISD, and Mrs. Laurel Lacy of Brownwood ISD.

As a special treat, students had lunch at Underwood’s Bar-B-Q before returning home. Band directors Dr. Rodney Bennett and Mrs. Marilyn Bennett accompanied the group.
