OHS band students compete in WF

Two members of the Pride of Olney High School Band students were among the finalists at the Wichita Falls Symphony League scholarship competition.

Junior Lily Thames, an oboeist, won second place and a cash scholarship from the League, which supports the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra as well as young musicians, OISD Band Director Dr. Rodney Bennett said.

Ms. Thames also will compete in the University Interscholastic League’s Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest [TSSEC] over Memorial Day weekend in Pflugerville, he said.

Maddox Johnson, a freshman, won honorable mention at the Wichita Falls Symphony League contest, and will also compete at TSSEC, he said.

An alto saxophone trio consisting of sophomores Sawyer Edgington, Jeffry Flores and Adrian Gonzalez also will advance to the state competition, Mr. Bennett said.

The competition will take place at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville.

Ms. Thames, in the Class 1 non memory required contest will play “Concerto for Oboe and Strings” by Ernest Eichner.

Mr. Edgington, Mr. Flores, and Mr. Gonzalez will compete in the Class 1 Saxophone Trio contest playing “Scherzo for Three Saxophones” by Arthur Franckenpohl.
