New FCA Chapter Comes to Olney

Recent transplant to Olney Coach Jason Powers, Defensive Coordinator for the Olney Cubs football team and wife Chayla Powers, recently brought the Fellowship of Christian Athletes [FCA] to Olney. The Powers held the first FCA meeting on Monday, August 23. The meeting place was inside the Olney high school gymnasium foyer.

The Powers’ said they planned on bringing a local chapter of the FCA to Olney with them because they wanted to bring something more substantial to Olney besides football and education. That something, the Powers’ say, is spiritual.

Chayla Powers said, “I just knew that if we were going to uproot our family and move them to a new town and start fresh, it had to be for a bigger cause, had to be for more than just coaching. So, I knew that we needed to see some fruit, spiritually in the community, not just for the team and then in the end that will help build the team also.”

Coach Powers expanded on why the Powers’ wanted to start a FCA chapter in Olney. “It’s to be able to be a part of a ministry, and be able to spread the word of God. One of the things about my ministry is being able to work with kids and whether it be in the classroom, which I can’t really do that here, or anywhere, but being out on the field and being able to have a bigger impact, and being able to spread the news of Christ and his gospel, but also being able to spread it to kids that may not get that opportunity through coaching, and also through this FCA program. I think it also encourages the kids that are believers to kind of come together through their programs and through the classes.”

The Powers’ will host the FCA meetings at 7 p.m. inside the high school gymnasium foyer on Monday evenings. When basketball season starts, the meetings will move to Thursday evenings. To learn more about the Olney Chapter of the FCA, please visit their Facebook page at, OlneyCubsFCA.
