City, State Sales Taxes Become Effective October 1

October 1 marks the beginning of the new city sales tax in Olney and the additional one per cent sales tax approved by the Texas Legislature.

Voters in Olney approved the sales tax measure last June, as did several other cities in this area. At almost the same time the legislature abandoned a proposal by Gov. John Connally to increase the state sales tax to three percent, with one percent going to cities, and simply increased the state sales tax to three percent.

Watch, Keys Turned to Police; Owners Saught

Olney police are in possession of a man’s watch and a set of keys, both found last week in the downtown area according to chief Cliff Blackstock. Owner of either can claim his property by going to the police department on Hamilton and describing the items.

Police arrested a patient who had walked away from the hospital in Wichita Falls and somehow managed to make it to Olney. She went to a restaurant, ordered and ate food, then refused to pay for it. Police were called and it was discovered that she had walked away from the hospital.
