Don’t be led astray

Don’t be led astray

“Then David said in his heart, “Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul.”

1 Samuel 27:1 NASBS

My brothers and sisters in Christ, never forget the deceitfulness of your own hearts. Though you have been bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit has illumined your soul to the truth of God’s word, your heart is still prone to wander. The word of God teaches us, “The heart is deceitful above all things,” and again it says, “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool.” Moses also penned under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, “The intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth.” What vivid language the Bible uses concerning what sin has done to the way we think. So in other words beloved, do not just respond to every thought that comes to your mind, but rather, press them through the truth of God’s word.

David himself, in the midst of a great storm that had stirred in his soul, left the God Whom He loved; The One Who had delivered him many times out of the enemy’s hands to serve a wicked Philistine King named Achish. Not only that, but the progressive nature of sin even led him to call Achish lord. Yes Christian, David, the man after God’s own heart, the one whom God delivered from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear, the one whom God used to destroy Goliath, found himself serving a King whom Satan was using to destroy God’s people. Listen to what he says, “Then David said to himself, ‘Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape into the land of the Philistines.’ So David arose and crossed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men.”

Though David was led astray by his heart, God would deliver him once again, but it nearly cost him and his family’s lives. Now listen to what the same man who jeopardized everything by listening to his deceitful heart wrote in the declining years of his life, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. Blessed are You, O LORD; Teach me Your statutes.” Christian, never go your own way, you have had many dark nights and the word of God has never left you desolate, you have had many conflicts and the light of His word has led you in the way of peace, you have known the faithfulness of God so walk in the light of His word regardless of how you feel or what you may be thinking. Learn from David, for the word of God was written for our instruction. May God be with you and keep you until the end.
