Court establishes 4-H Week in Texas

At a regular meeting of the Young County Commissioner’s Court on Monday, Sept. 24, the court proclaimed the week of Oct. 7-13, 2018, as National 4-H Week in Texas.

In attendance were 4-H students from Graham and Newcastle, Texas, along with Young County Extension Agents Justin Rogers and Penny Berend, who stood before the court to proudly represent their organization.

Young County Judge John Bullock said the court was happy to honor the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s 4-H Youth and Development Program, that has provided experiencebased education for more than a century throughout the state.

“This admirable program, which seeks to provide a learning experience for the whole child – including head, heart, hands and health – helps young Texans to acquire knowledge, develop life skills and form attitudes to enable them to become selfdirected, productive and contributing members of society,” he said.

Bullock also commented on the success of the program as explained on the AgriLife Extension’s website: with its more than 500,000 urban, suburban and rural youth participants, ranging from ages eight to 18, that he said truly represent a cross-section of the state.

“The program, undoubtedly, would also not have achieved the success it has today where it not for the service of its more than 22,000 statewide volunteers, who have given generously of their time, talents, energy and resources to the youth of Texas,” he said. “Throughout its proud history, the program has developed models for countless of Texas, and, through its innovative and inspiring program, continues to build character and to instill the values that have made our state strong and great. The court commends the program and the many men and women who have made this program a success.”
