County GOP, Dems hold conventions in Graham

Young County Republicans and Democrats met on Saturday in Graham to choose delegates and formulate local resolutions for their state conventions. About 12 Republicans met to elect their delegates at the District Courtroom, County GOP Chairwoman Jennifer McDonald said. The group chose not to write any resolutions for the Texas Republican Convention, set for May 2325 in San Antonio. County Treasurer Kyle Milam said he will also throw his hat in the ring to become an elector.

Fifteen Democrats met in the County Courtroom to elect delegates to the Texas Democratic Convention in El Paso from June 6-8. The Democrats wrote several resolutions to take to the statewide convention, asking the state party to ensure females’ access to reproductive health care. The attendees also expressed support for statewide voting by mail to remove barriers to voting for those with limited or no transportation. The resolution comes after Texas repealed voting rules that allowed Young County residents to vote at any polling place, regardless of their residence.

The Democrats penned a third resolution supporting public education and expressing opposition to the Education Savings Accounts and “any form of vouchers” that Gov. Greg Abbott has attempted and failed to pass in last year’s special sessions.
