Citywide cleanup set for March 22-29

The City will hold its annual citywide Cleanup Week earlier than usual - from March 22 through March 29 – so that Waste Connections can coordinate the delivery of large dumpsters that are used throughout its service area, City Secretary Tammy Hourigan said.

The City offices will be closed on March 29 for the Good Friday holiday so the crew will not be doing pickups on that day but the Olney Convenience Station at 5920 Olney Road will be open, Ms. Hourigan said.

The Convenience Station will be closed on Saturday, March 30 for the Easter holiday, she said. Normally, the Convenience Station is closed Monday but will be open Monday. March 25 to compensate for the Friday closure, she said.

The City typically encourages residents to do their spring cleaning in late April through early May. Residents ready to part with old appliances or other unwanted items during the household sprucing will have help from City workers during Cleanup week.

During Cleanup Week, City trucks will patrol Olney’s residential streets to pick up large items and bagged trash for free and without an appointment.

The items must be placed on the front curb and not in alley or beside dumpsters, city officials said. The City will post on its Facebook page a list of items the Public Works crews will accept. That list will include household appliances, furniture, limbs, debris, bagged leaves and other general junk.

The City will not pick up cement, batteries or paint, and appliances must have freon removed and properly disposed of before pickup, city officials said.

Residents can take old tires to the convenience station at 5930 Olney Road.

City residents with active and current water bills can have one load of brush and limbs hauled away for free each month outside of Cleanup Week. A load measures 8-feet by 5 feet by 5 feet – approximately the size of a pickup truck bed. The City normally charges $23 plus tax and requires residents to make a reservation to have large items picked up.

City leaders are pushing to keep the town looking smart, and wanted to remind residents that they no longer have workers driving the streets removing curbside junk.

Residents who miss their chance for free trash removal during Cleanup Week can contact the City at 940-276-2011 to schedule a pickup, and provide their name, utility service address and a phone number. Residents who don’t have water service can come into City Hall to schedule and pay for pickups.
