Banned Book Project Debuts at Olney Library

Banned Book Awareness is now on display at the Olney Community Library thanks to Laney Kimbro and Lori Cox. Kimbro’s project is a part of her Lone Star Leadership Academy Alumni Council community service project requirement.

“My leadership council project was to raise money to buy 30 young adult and children’s frequently banned and challenged books for the local library,” Kimbro said. “Our local library is great about letting people read what they want to read, but not every library is that way. I bought and donated the books to the OCL and put up a display of the books and a notebook of information on why each has been challenged or banned somewhere.”

The money for the books was raised through a bake sale in front of Stewart’s Food Store. The extra money left over was donated to OCL. Kimbro chose books people would feel strongly about, books they may have read as a kid and may not realize there is an issue for some people.

“I decided to do this project because I feel very passionately about the idea of banned and challenged books and I believe that it should not be something that exists in society. One person or one group should not determine what everyone has a chance to read. My end goal with this project is to raise awareness for banned and challenged books, which is an all to ignored issue.”
