“Tex-Mex” - The Food of Texans

Besides Texas Bar-B-Q, most people will agree that there is nothing as great as Tex-Mex food.

If you are not from Texas, you may not understand what I am talking about. It is about the flavors, the salsa and chips, and the overall deliciousness of the food.

My first experience with good Tex-Mex food was in the 1950’s when Joe Ross opened his No-D-Lay Restaurant. The enchiladas and closed tacos were to die for. After church on Sunday night a group of us would go out and just eat chips and salsa for a special treat and visit with friends—so good!

I have eaten the Mexican food in Santa Fe. It was so spicy hot that it actually took the flavor away from the food. I have eaten the Mexican food in Old Mexico… definitely not as tasty as Tex-Mex.

It was a wonderful surprise when I went to a restaurant in Jonesboro, TN that actually served Tex-Mex food as good as I have ever eaten! The reason— the owner had lived in Lubbock, TX for a few years, and learned the secret of making Tex-Mex food. I would love to go to that restaurant again!

Then there is the question of good or great salsa. Normally, the salsa made in Texas is the best. My out-of-state family is always looking for good salsa. We have been known to transport cases of Texas-made salsa from our own local grocery store to Alabama.

My daughter in Tennessee doesn’t have access to good Texas salsa. She makes her own and cans several quarts of salsa at a time and stores it away. It is so delicious.

I traveled with an art group for many years. Someone made the comment that in order to travel with the group, you had to like Tex-Mex food and own 2 cameras—in case of a camera malfunction!

People in other states just don’t understand Texans and our foods. They certainly did not understand Texans when we all went “crazy” over the temporary close down of the Blue Bell plant a few years ago. I tried a few brands of ice cream, but finally just quit eating ice cream for a while.

It is a fact, Texas food is the best. Texans are special people, and Texas isthe best place to live.

God Bless Texas!
