Working our way thru December

Working our way thru December

The season is moving fast now. Thanksgiving was a whorl with the plans for family, food menu, and maybe travel to visit family. Mine was a very quiet time, as only a few were able to come home.

I always fix turkey/ chicken & dressing, but with only a few of us to indulge in the delightful tradition, I did not plan to go to the trouble of the extra cooking…maybe just a chicken dish of some sort.

My daughter insisted on bringing dressing from United to fulfill the traditional meal. I added the chicken and side dishes, and voila’… a delicious traditional meal was achieved after all.

Now, the Christmas season is in full throttle. There are decorations to choose, and a tree to decorate. It is always a delightful time of events and gatherings. And there are the many gifts to choose and share with friends and family.

I thought of Christmases of the past. I thought about my growing up years, and how different it was growing up as an only child. We gathered with grandparents, cousins, aunts & uncles for holiday gatherings. We did not do a lot of decorating, but I loved decorating the Christmas tree—I loved those little stringy silver ice cycles.

Our gifts were not lavash. It seems that today children have so much, and continue to receive an abundance to toys, clothes, and gadgets. I guess money did not flow as freely as it does today, but we did not know the difference. Life went on at a more simple pace.

In today’s world it is still important to give to those around us. It doesn’t need to be lavish. Sharing the simple gift of home baked cookies or candy shows our love for one another. It is still the thought that counts!
