Support for speed limit reduction pours in from community

Support continues to pour in concerning a potential speed limit reduction on Highway 251 in Olney. This issue has resurfaced over the past month, with several residents in the area wanting to see a change given the amount of potential accidents that could occur in this area. Some believe it is better to make a change before more life threatening accidents arise.

We have conducted a poll on the Olney Facebook page, asking residents to vote and give their opinion on this issue. The Olney Enterprise Facebook states “We are looking for your opinion on if you think the speed limit should be reduced leaving Olney heading towards Newcastle on Highway 251, from 75 mph to 55 mph. There is a school bus drop off point at this location. “

So far, the poll has more than 200 votes with 62 percent voting to reduce the speed limit. In just one day, people have posted several comments with almost all of them showing their support for a reduced speed limit on Hwy 251. Here are some of comments:

“We live on 251 and 75 mph is way too fast in front of our house. My kids play in the front yard and the school bus stops at our house. Please, change,”said local resident Pamela Lisle. Another resident stated,

Another resident stated, “I would have voted no on reducing the speed until I read the comments explaining how this would be benefiting the safety of children loading and unloading at a bus stop. And safety for the bus driver and other children already on the bus.”
