Praying for America

Praying for America

In 2001 my family requested that I write my autobiography. I didn’t promise, but secretly I proceeded to write my life story, including family photos. Then, at Christmas of that year, I surprised each one with a copy of the book. It is hard to believe that it was 20 years ago.

I think back to my childhood when I could go to the Saturday movie, buy popcorn, and purchase a toy from Mott’s--all for a quarter! Today, the same would probably cost $20. Children were safe on our city streets, and playing up and down the neighborhood until mothers called them in at bedtime was a typical summer evening.

My husband and I often talked about how we grew up during the best times in history--after WWII and until the Vietnam War. In 1955 during our early marriage, $10,000 was a nice little ‘nest egg,’ and owning a second car was a luxury. Our greatest dream was to have a family and live life as we knew it.

Changes in our lives came quickly when prayer in our schools was outlawed. The “hippie” and “gay” movements began to make national headlines, and society seemed to accept lifestyles never thought of. We saw the younger generation become less patriotic.

Looking at the present, we survived 2020, thinking 2021 would be “a new beginning.” Well, Jan. 6, 2021, still looms at the forefront of the news, and the virus continues to plague our lives daily. Inflation is out of the roof, and on some days, we are not sure why the grocery shelves are bare.

I finished writing my autobiography in September 2001, noting the event of 9/11, and stating, “America may never be the same!” I am so sad that my prediction for the future of America was true.

I mourn for America as we knew it…and pray for America’s future.
