Kicking off the year with a New Year with a Healthier Lifestyle

We have leaped into a new year with new dreams and goals; some of us have New Year’s resolutions. A group of 27 people came together with a common goal for the new year--to embark on its first fitness challenge. P.RE.T.T.Y. Girl Fitness, LLC is facilitating a faith-based sugar detox designed to cleanse the body after indulging in holiday feasts. It was essential to start the detox on Jan. 1 to promote a healthier start to the year. So, we gathered at the Refuge for a kickstart meeting to discuss the parameters of the challenge and solidify our support of one another. Most attendees signed up, hoping to learn how to eat mindfully and become more disciplined at the table.

Why is it important to consider detoxing from sugar? Sugar hurts the body and brain. It has been linked to cancer and has contributed to the obesity epidemic in America, brought to the forefront in Katie Couric’s documentary, “Fed Up.” The documentary elaborately addresses the disadvantages surrounding the overconsumption of sugar. An interesting segment of the film discloses a study involving lab mice that revealed the rats’ preference for sugar over cocaine, proving that sugar is just as addictive as drugs. After watching this film years ago, I was motivated to re-evaluate my sugar consumption. I’ve asked the participants to watch the movie, and I hope it will change their perspective as it did for me.

On the fifth day, many detox participants realize that detoxing from sugar isn’t as easy as they thought it would be. They report withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and skin irritability. Although these symptoms are annoying, they are inevitable with a sugar detox. However, these characteristics are an indication that the body is releasing toxins.

Regardless of the detox’s negative manifestations, some participants reported weight loss because a diet with less sugar drastically reduces calories and fat. This specific sugar detox is especially beneficial for weight loss because it prohibits the consumption of hidden sugar as well as added sugar. Additional benefits participants can look forward to after the detox include gorgeous skin, higher energy, quality sleep, and enhanced mental clarity.
