Flag retirement and market days

Olney Legion Post 414 hosted a Flag Retirement Ceremony to open the June Olney Market Days. Chris Garcia, Commander of Legion Post 414, said he knew that a flag retirement ceremony had not been performed in a long time and after talking with others knew one was greatly needed. The ceremony opened with a bugle call from POOHS Director Rodney Bennett, who also closed the ceremony with Taps. Pastor Sean Reeves of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, gave an invocation followed by a patriotic poem written and read by Shad Sullivan. The ceremony progressed with a speech by Mr. Garcia and the ceremony and burning of the
flags with the help of the Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Members. The ceremony was a great success with the help of members of the Legion, family and friends.

Olney Market Days [OMD] set up in the Olney Legion Post 414 to beat the Texas summer heat of June. Katie Carls, the creator of OMD, shown here having fun at her booth, The Rebel Soul Mercantile. Ms. Carls decided to move the June Market Day to Olney Legion Post 414 to give shoppers a chance to get out of that hot summer sun and into the a/c. The market added a food vendor to feed hungry shoppers who began the day with a flag retirement ceremony performed by the Olney Legion Post. The food vendor, Antojito’s Food Truck, served up Mexican fare.
