Having Cub fever

I was looking at the calendar for next month and it’s the time of year again for 2 a-days! Football is near and dear to my heart and I’m super excited for the Cubs upcoming season.

I’ve loved football since watching the Cowboys over Thanksgiving as a kid and doing my best playing back yard catch after the game. My love grew as I later grew into a giant of a young man and began playing for the optimist leagues. Coaches knew to put my size to good use on the line, where I mostly played right or left guard.

I did a pretty good job. Nothing brought me more pleasure as a player than to flatten anyone brave enough to line up on me. When not pancaking, I loved to open holes in the defensive line you could drive a Mack truck through. Though I played defense as well and had fun, it never brought the satisfaction of being on the O line.

Anyone who knows me knows I love my Chiefs, having been a fan since Joe Montana’s time. I also root for the Cowboys, but put them slightly under the Chiefs. With Dallas there have been a lot of seasons of disappointment but with any team, you take the good with the bad, at least if you are a true fan.

My love of Friday Night Lights picked up when I moved to Olney seven years ago. I am a rabid Cubs fan and don’t let me ever hear you speaking an ill word about my Cubs.

Here’s why: the players play with extreme heart, never wanting to disappoint our little town of Olney. The Cubs fight to the end, even if victory is surely not attainable. They are courageous and full of grit. I have seen the Cubs time and time face opponents far out of their league without wavering an inch.

I also love the community that comes out on Friday nights. People in Olney know adversity and are tough. We’ve got the spirit to dig deep and keep pushing!

I am excited for August to get here so I can get out and watch practice, ending the long drought of not being able to get out and cheer on my Cubs!

This is Will B saying, LET’S GO CUBS!!
