Varsity Girls defeat Chico in first game, Boys take loss to Graford
It is definitely no secret that when the Lady Cubs take to the court they are relentless and fierce. On Tuesday night, in their first game of the season, the Lady Cubs walked away with a 42-20 victory against the Chico Lady Dragons.
Starters for the Lady Cubs were: Myka Manuel, La’Anna Golden, Jae Montgomery, Shae Sallee and Courtney Williams. Montgomery led the team scoring eight points. Golden and Melanie Allen each had six points. Sallee, Lexi Allsbrooks, Baylee Young and Anahi Marquez scored four and Manuel, Williams and Abbey Harrison scored two.
The team had a total of 18 steals, 12 assists, 18 defensive rebounds, 13 deflections and eight offensive rebounds. They also made 17 out of 44 field goal shots. The Lady Cubs also managed to rack up 15 out of 32 two-point shots but only 2 for 12 three-pointers. Marquez, Montgomery and Young all scored two free throws each.
The Lady Cubs are business when it comes winning even if it means getting plenty of personal fouls. Williams and Young lead Olney in PF with a combined total of nine. Williams had four; Young had five. La’Anna Golden also had four PF against her.
The Varsity girls will host Anson tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 17, at 5 p.m. and find out if their go-hard attitude is tough enough to take down the mighty Tigers.
The Olney Cubs hosted the Graford Jackrabbits in hopes of defending their home court for their second game of the season. Unfortunately, the Jackrabbits were too quick for the Cubs and they fell short with a final score of 64-72.
In the first half of the game, the Cubs were able to score a total of 17 points. When the team came back out onto the court after the half, they amped up their game and scored an additional 47 points.
Olney’s players are all fairly young with just a handful of juniors but mostly freshmen and sophomores. This year, there are no seniors to lead the team.
Jaylynn Terry racked up almost half of the points for the Cubs with seven two pointers, four three-pointers and four FT for a total of 30 points. Garrett Trevino had two 2p’s and four 3p’s for 16 points. Also scoring was Parker Mayers with four 2p’s and 2 FT for 10 points. Carter Hindon and Tanner Hudson each secured five points for the Cubs. Gabe got himself a free throw for one point.
During the first half of the game, the team had a combined total of eight personal fouls whereas in the second half they got 10. After a brief altercation between Cesar Flores and Preston Tabor, number one for the Jackrabbits, the Cubs turned the heat up a little more. In the final minutes of the contest, Olney kept Graford from scoring an additional four points. The final score was 64-72.
The Cubs will be traveling to Holiday to take on the Eagles on Monday, Nov. 20, with the hopes of regaining momentum to find themselves a win. The game is set to begin at 6:15 p.m.
