OHS debate team excels at Joshua meet

The OHS debate team participated in the Joshua Speech and Debate tournament on Saturday, Jan. 13, against students from the 4, 5, and 6A divisions. Morgan Simmons placed first in informative extemporaneous speaking, and Joselyn Marquez placed fifth.

This event requires students to write a speech about a current event topic in 30 minutes and then give a seven-minute speech on their subject.

“The students that attended the tournament did an outstanding job and did exceptionally well in their competition,” said coach Lani Caffey. “Even though not every student placed, each student that competed learned new skills and only made room for improvement during Saturday’s competition.”

The OHS debate team brought two teams for the cross examination debate: Allie Barrington and Joselyn Marquez for one team, and Maddox Johnson and Foster Sullivian for the second team.

The two teams didn’t place, but each student performed well and battled hard against their formidable opponents.

Sawyer Edgington represented the team in The Lincoln Douglas Debate and the persuasive speaking competition. Ava Stewart competed in informative speaking.
