District baseball action continued for the Olney Cubs over spring break last week on back-to-back days. When the dust cleared, the Cubs had recorded a big loss and an equally big win. The JV Cubs also got in on the action with a victory over Chillicothe.

Olney 5, Chico 20

The Dragons came to Olney on a warm, sunny Tuesday, March 11, and handed the Cubs a 20-5 loss. Olney actually led 1-0 after one inning of play, but Chico added five in the second to take a commanding lead. The Cubs fought back and posted four in the fourth, but Chico added another five and then finished with 10 runs in the fifth inning to post the big win.

Dylan Hudson took the loss on the mound, pitching the first four innings. He allowed five hits and struck out six batters. Adam Gipson pitched a portion of the fifth inning, striking out two.


Leading hitter for Olney was Brandon Bowden, who was two-for-four. Gipson and Drew McVicker each hit a double, and a hit was also recorded by Daven Lough.

Olney 16, Bryson 1

The Cubs turned things around on Wednesday, March 12, by posting a huge win over Bryson in front of a home crowd. Olney led the game from the start, outscoring Bryson 5-1 in the first inning. The Cubs added eight in the third and three in the fourth while keeping Bryson scoreless.

McVicker got the win on the mound. During his four innings as pitcher, he allowed a single hit, walked just four and struck out 10. Jesse Acuna finished the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out three batters.

Garza and Tracey Jones each recorded doubles for Olney and Bowden was two-for-four with a triple. Other Cubs who recorded hits were McVicker, Timmy Acuna, Lough and Ty Green.

JV Cubs 26, 

Chillicothe 11

Olney’s JV boys recorded a big win on the road Monday, March 10. After establishing a 6-3 lead in the first inning, Olney added to it with a 3-1 second frame. The Cubs posted seven in the third, nine in the fourth and one in the fifth as well.

Kolton Piercy got the victory on the mound. In his three innings, he walked three and struck out four. Caleb Fernandez walked three batters, Cody Harvey walked three and struck out one, Brent McCorkle walked two and struck out three and Jon Guerra struck out one.

During the game, Austin Graves had one home run and Harvey blasted two. Piercy recorded two doubles and Guerra, Tommy Acuna, Will Allen and Coby Slater each had one. Andrew Bernhardt also had a hit.

On Friday, the varsity Cubs will take on Archer City in district play. The home game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Action on Tuesday, March 25, will be in Windthorst at 5 p.m.
