Police Beat 8/18

We have cruised through another hot summer but with a little rain this year.  Olney I.S.D. will be in session next week.  Where did the time go?  I want to share a few safety tips to assist you as school starts.

You will notice more traffic with parents dropping students off at school and those High School kids with a brand new drivers license driving to school.  Please plan to leave your house earlier than normal and plan for a few delays.

Watch carefully for the flashing yellow lights in the school zones.  Driving speed is not to exceed 20 MPH when the lights are flashing.  Be aware of students walking to school.  Pedestrians have the right of way.  Slow down and be prepared to stop to let the students walk across the road on their destiny to school and home.  Watch out for the increased number of Bicycles on the streets.  Many students ride them to school.  They will cross Main Street right in front of you.  Watch carefully and be prepared to make a sudden stop.

We have too many distractions inside our vehicles that cause us to loose focus.  Don’t be talking on your phone in the school zone.  It is illegal and you will get a citation for that.  Don’t be texting and driving in the area of the school.  I recommend you not text at all while driving.  It is important to pay attention to those little ones headed to school.  They slip out from behind vehicles and pop up from nowhere it seems.  I know none of us want to hurt a little child so let me just encourage you to pay attention, slow down, and take a little extra time to get to your destination.  Your Olney Police Department is here to assist you.  Call us if you need us.
