Staying fire free this winter

Looks like old man winter is knocking at the door. You are probably packing up the summer wardrobe and putting them away.

Some of you have central air and heat and I hope you made time to have it serviced and see that all is in good working order. Many of you use fireplaces or gas space heaters or other open flame type heaters at your home. Please take the time to take good safety precautions.

Have your fireplace and chimney checked by professionals for any possible fire hazards. If you have a wood burning stove make sure your walls that are close to it are insulated from the heat. If you are using gas space heaters have them checked for any possible gas leaks and other possible hazards.

Take extra care to see that clothes and other combustible material is not stored or laying around these open flame type heaters. Please take time to plan and practice a fire escape should you have a fire. Have a meeting place set outside your home where everyone is to go if you have a fire. Check all your smoke detectors and put new batteries in them. Know where all your fire extinguishers are located and make sure they are up to date. Safety and protection of you and the lives of your family are paramount.

Stay safe this winter season. Remember your Olney Police Department is here to serve you. Call us if you need us.
