George Owens

George Owens, age 82 of Newcastle, Texas, passed away September 28, 2023. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Lunn Funeral Home in Olney. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 1, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Newcastle with John Swedlund officiating, assisted by Jessie Edwards. Interment will follow in Newcastle Cemetery under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.

George was born November 24, 1940, in Olney, Texas to the late Woodrow Wilson Owens and Georgia Faye (Shipley) Owens. He was a lifetime resident of Texas, growing up in the communities of Padgett, Olney and Proffitt. He graduated from Newcastle High School. He then attended Tarleton Junior College and did a little bull riding with the rodeo club. He married Kozy Tomlinson on October 22, 1961, in Newcastle, Texas. They spent their early years of marriage in Ft. Worth, Sweetwater and Wichita Falls, eventually settling down in Newcastle. George learned to work with his Dad farming and baling hay. Moving off the farm, he worked for various companies including Brazos Telephone, Bell Helicopter and Billy Averett Construction just to name a few. George was employed at Air Tractor for 35 years and he made many lifetime friends while working there. He also loved farming and ranching in Young and Throckmorton Counties, and was always going to the farm to check on the cows. He served on the Newcastle School board and was a Master Mason in the Newcastle Lodge #1057 A.F. & A.M. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Newcastle where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher. George never met a stranger and would joke around with everyone he knew. He loved his family dearly and looked forward to the times they gathered together to have a full house, whether it was on Sundays or holidays.

George was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law: Bill Wilkinson and John Tomlinson.

George is survived by his wife, Kozy Owens of Newcastle; his daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Kerry Lowe of Newcastle; his son and daughter-in-law, Ty and Kathy Owens of Graham; ten grandchildren: Lacey Lowe, Cody Lowe, Shot Lowe and wife Natalie, Tristen Owens, Emily Hutchens and husband Jase, Jeb Owens and wife Nicole, Karsen Owens, Julia Grimes, Robb Grimes and Scott Grimes; one great-granddaughter, Ivy Owens; one sister, Gwen Wilkinson of Newcastle; sister-in-law and husband, Janiece and John Swedlund of Austin; sister-in-law, Kim Tomlinson of Olney, along with many nieces and nephews.
