F.L. “Red” Livingston, 90, of Megargel, Texas, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Hamilton Hospital in Olney, Texas, following a long illness. Memorial services were conducted at 11 am on Monday, July 21, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church in Olney, Texas, with Scotte Clark officiating, assisted by Harrell Braddock, Jr., pastor of First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.

Red was born in Quitman, Ark., and moved to Westover, Texas, in 1930. He graduated from Westover High School in 1942.

Red had various occupations starting at the age of 17: he drove a school bus, he was a harvester and a farmer. In 1945, Red married the love of his life, Betty Jo Reid. He went into the drilling business in 1951 and operated under the name of Megargel Drilling Company until the early 1990s. After retiring from the drilling business he continued to farm and ranch until he was unable.

Red’s greatest legacy was that everyone who knew him says he was the most honest person they have ever met and they have never heard a bad word about him. Red was a great contributor and supporter of communities in the area. He served on the school board for Megargel Independent School District, built the city park in Megargel and was awarded the Community Builder award in 1992. He also was a member of the Olney Rodeo Association and provided materials and labor to help build the Seymour Rodeo Arena. He helped build the emergency water line to Olney and had the only independently sponsored covered wagon in the Bicentennial Wagon Train that traveled from Houston, Texas, to Valley Forge, Penn.

Red was preceded in death by his parents, Benny and Sally Shaw Livingston; two brothers: Dennis Livingston and J.D. “Lanky” Livingston; three sons: Freddie Livingston Sr., Eddie Livingston and David Livingston Sr.; and a grandson, Reid Livingston.

He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Betty Livingston; one daughter, Laurie Tinney and husband, Cecil; nine grandchildren: Diane Collins and husband, Terry, Freddie Livingston Jr. and wife, Angie, Reno Livingston and wife, Kelly, David Livingston Jr., Julie Reynolds and husband, Steven, Sarah Kelcy and husband, Clark, Misty King, Lindy Kromer and husband, Chris, and Katie Tinney; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lindell McCarty; and one brother, O.G. “Shorty” Livingston.

The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at Lunn Funeral Home in Olney, Texas.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls, P.O. Box 4804, Wichita Falls, Texas 76308; Hamilton Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 158, Olney, Texas 76374; or the First United Methodist Church of Olney, P.O. Box 305, Olney, Texas 76374.
